Wellness coaching at The Granite YMCA is a free service available to all members. Whether you’re just starting out or are looking to refresh your routine, our friendly and professional wellness staff are here to guide you towards your goal.

Why Wellness Coaching?

Wellness coaching is more than just learning how to use gym equipment. It’s about connecting with one of our coaches who will work with you to define your personal wellness goals, whether that’s leading a healthier lifestyle, gaining strength, or simply learning to navigate wellness areas and machines with confidence. From proper equipment usage to personalized fitness suggestions, wellness coaching covers a wide array of needs for our members.

What to Expect During Your Coaching Session

  • Defining Goals: When you arrive at the YMCA for your session, your coach will start by asking a few questions. What brings you to the Y? What are you excited to try? What are your goals? Maybe you want to try a new group exercise class, swim laps in the pool, or start a strength training routine. Your coach will lead you in the right direction based on your preferences, lifestyle, and fitness level. You’ll also spend time setting goals, from short-term fitness milestones to long-term health improvements.
  • Touring the Facility: Based on your personal goals and needs, your wellness coaching session may offer a personalized tour of the facility, followed by lessons on how to safely and effectively use exercise machines and equipment. If you’ve never used a treadmill or are unsure about specific strength training exercises, don’t worry—your coach is here to make sure you’re comfortable and confident!
  • Continuous Support: The support from your wellness coach doesn’t need to stop after your first session. Our members can schedule additional sessions as needed. Coaches are always available in the Wellness Center to answer questions and provide ongoing support. We believe everyone can find connection at the Y, and our coaches are here to ensure that every visit helps you move closer to achieving your goals.

Wellness Coaching vs. Personal Training: What's the Difference?

Wellness coaching focuses on creating a solid foundation for a healthy lifestyle, teaching you how to set goals, use the equipment, and get comfortable with the gym environment. It’s great for those who are new to fitness or want to try something new and need a bit of guidance.

Personal training offers a more in-depth, one-on-one experience with a certified trainer who will create a specific workout plan tailored to your exact goals. If you’re training for a marathon, looking to lose a specific amount of weight, or need a higher level of accountability, personal training might be the right step for you. Personal training sessions are available for an additional fee.
