The Granite YMCA Helps Community Splash With Confidence
May is National Water Safety Month, and the perfect time to get involved in swim lessons. As America’s Swim Instructor, the Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.
Swim lessons help increase accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels. Lessons accommodate varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers’ progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.
“Swim lessons are a rite of passage; helping kids and adults stay safe in and around the water while developing a love of swimming,” said Kayla Bushway, Aquatics Coordinator at the YMCA of Downtown Manchester. “Participants can progress at their own pace while building the confidence needed to become a successful swimmer.”
Not only are you taught how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills, and about water activities you can enjoy for years to come. Instruction is caring and personalized, and a variety of classes are available to meet family and individual needs.
Registration has already begun for the next session of swim lessons, which runs from May 1 through June 18. Registration will remain open until May 14.

- Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty, never alone.
- Adults should constantly and actively watch their children.
- Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Parents or guardians of young children should be within an arm’s reach.
- Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities.
