In Support of a Brighter Future for Area Youth

Posted 03/08/2019

On Thursday, February 21, The Granite YMCA welcomed an audience of over 200 business leaders, local organizations and students to its annual Community Partners Luncheon at the Puritan Backroom Conference Center.

“This event really is a celebration of the enduring impact that our many partners have upon local students,” said Michele Sheppard, COO for The Granite YMCA. “It’s our opportunity to thank them for their kindness and generosity and a chance for them to meet and speak with students in our Y-STAY and Y-START programs.”

Offered at Beech Street and Henry Wilson schools in Manchester, the Y-START program provides a safe, structured after-school environment aimed at low-income children. The program currently serves 125 local students. Y-STAY, offered at Parkside, Hillside, McLaughlin and Southside middle schools, provides direct and in-direct services to more than 103 at risk middle school students who may need additional help to be successful in school due to a variety of factors. The program provides a broad range of services including academic support, mentoring, time management and healthy behaviors.

Attendees at the event heard from a number of speakers, highlighted by speeches from Y-STAY student Yahya Ahmed and alumni, Skye Freeman who shared their experiences and the impact the program has made in their successful growth as students.

“Being in Y-STAY has taught me how to be brave and to stay confident in everything that I do,” Ahmed told the audience. “I am really sad to say that this year is my last in Y-STAY. However, I plan to take the things I’ve learned into my future.”

Freeman remarked to the group that STAY had provided her with key tools on how to succeed in school and life. “I was in Y-Stay five years ago and the skills that it gave me still help me with my every day in life. Thanks to Y-STAY, I am excited to share that I have received a $21,000 scholarship to Dean College for this fall.”

This year, The Granite YMCA was proud to present PROCON with the first Youth Opportunities Unlimited Community Partner of the Year award. In September of 2018, the YMCA of Downtown Manchester opened the new Center for Youth and Teen Leadership, a 5,000 square foot state-of-the-art space for teens to gather, receive homework support, engage in teen led special event projects, explore STEAM activities, or work at the computer tech bar. It is because of PROCON’s generous Capital Campaign gift, that more students have access to a safe place during after school hours. In addition, over the last six years the PROCON team has adopted 80 Y-START and Y-STAY students during the holiday season by providing Christmas presents for the students. None of this would have been possible without their support.

Community partners honored at the event included:

  • Bank of New Hampshire
  • Bean Foundation
  • Boys & Girls Club of Manchester
  • Citizens Bank
  • City of Manchester
  • Cogswell Benevolent Trust
  • Cross Insurance
