The Granite YMCA Helps Community Splash With Confidence

Posted 05/11/2017

May is National Water Safety Month, and the perfect time to get involved in swim lessons. As America’s Swim Instructor, the Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.

Swim lessons help increase accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels. Lessons accommodate varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers’ progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.

“Swim lessons are a rite of passage; helping kids and adults stay safe in and around the water while developing a love of swimming,” said Kayla Bushway, Aquatics Coordinator at the YMCA of Downtown Manchester. “Participants can progress at their own pace while building the confidence needed to become a successful swimmer.”

Not only are you taught how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills, and about water activities you can enjoy for years to come. Instruction is caring and personalized, and a variety of classes are available to meet family and individual needs.

Registration has already begun for the next session of swim lessons, which runs from May 1 through June 18. Registration will remain open until May 14.

Swim Lessons are offered at the following Granite YMCA locations:

YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown located at 116 Goffstown Back Road in Goffstown, NH. For more information, contact Anna-Lise Leblanc, Director of Aquatics at 603.232.8653 or email aleblanc@graniteymca.org.

YMCA of Downtown Manchester located at 30 Mechanic Street in Manchester, NH. For more information, contact Kayla Bushway, Aquatics Coordinator at 603.232.8622 or email kbushway@graniteymca.org.

YMCA of Greater Londonderry located at 206 Rockingham Road in Londonderry, NH. The outdoor pool will be opening June 5, 2017. For more information, contact the Welcome Center at 603.437.9622

YMCA of the Seacoast (Portsmouth) located at 550 Peverly Hill Road in Portsmouth, NH. For more information, contact Erin Daly, Aquatics Coordinator at 603.431.2334 or edaley@graniteymca.org.

As part of summer water safety month, The Granite YMCA encourages parents to take an active role in their child’s safety. The following are safety tips in and around the water:

  • Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty, never alone.
  • Adults should constantly and actively watch their children.
  • Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Parents or guardians of young children should be within an arm’s reach.
  • Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities.

Families interested in learning more about Y swim lessons and water safety classes should visit www.graniteymca.org
